Before You Market Anything, Ask This One Question

by Sarah Wilson

Ever sat down to “do some marketing” and found yourself aimlessly scrolling Instagram, tweaking your website font (again), or googling “how to go viral”?

Same, friend. Same.

But here’s the truth: without a goal, your marketing is just busywork with a cute Canva template.

If you want your marketing to work—to bring in leads, grow your audience, and ultimately help your business grow—you’ve got to know what you’re aiming for. That’s why setting a goal, even a small or broad one, is the first step in any successful marketing effort.

Why Setting a Goal is a Game Changer

Think of your marketing goal like a GPS destination. Without it, you’re just driving around, burning gas (read: time and money) and hoping you stumble across success.

But when you set a clear goal? You instantly have:

  • Direction – You know where you’re headed.
  • Focus – You can ignore all the shiny distractions that aren’t moving you forward.
  • Clarity – You can track progress and know what’s working (and what’s not).

Ask Yourself This Before You Start Marketing

Before you post, plan, or promote anything, ask:

“What do I want my marketing to do for me?”

Seriously. Sit with it. Journal it. Put it on a sticky note. Then choose a goal that makes sense for your current season of business.

Here are a few example categories to get your brain buzzing:

Common Marketing Goals:

  1. Brand Awareness & Visibility – Get your name out there so people know you exist.
  2. Lead Generation & List Building – Grow your email list or get new inquiries.
  3. New Customer Acquisition – Convert followers into paying clients or customers.
  4. Community Building & Engagement – Build trust and relationships with your audience.
  5. Content & Thought Leadership – Share your expertise and position yourself as the go-to.
  6. Sales & Revenue Growth – Sell more of your product or service.
  7. Customer Retention & Loyalty – Keep your current clients coming back for more.
  8. Product Launch & Promotion – Build excitement and boost visibility for something new.
  9. Partnerships & Referrals – Grow your biz through word-of-mouth or strategic collaborations.

Tips for Setting (and Using) Your Goal

  1. Start small and specific
Instead of “I want more clients,” try “I want to book 5 discovery calls this month.”
  2. Pick one main focus at a time
Multi-tasking your marketing goals is a recipe for burnout. Choose one primary focus, then align your actions around it.
  3. Let your goal guide your content
If your goal is building community, you might prioritize interactive content like Q&As or polls. If your goal is lead generation, focus on a freebie and email opt-ins.
  4. Use your goal to filter your ideas
Not every “cool idea” needs to happen right now. If it doesn’t serve your current goal, park it for later.
  5. Review and reassess
Check in regularly. Is your content moving you toward your goal? Great! If not, tweak the strategy, not the goal.

One Goal = A Strategic Marketing Plan

Whether your goal is to grow your audience or just finally launch that one product you’ve been sitting on, naming your goal helps you work smarter—not just harder.

It turns overwhelm into intentional action. It makes “marketing” feel less like a giant to-do list and more like a purposeful path forward.

And hey,if you ever feel stuck, come back to that one question:

“What do I want my marketing to do for me?”

That answer is where your strategy begins.
